Cat Heaven Liner Notes
PROCESS:
A Representation of Coming of Age
I began my conceptual development for Cat Heaven by crafting a moodboard, drawing heavily on the feelings of isolation and loneliness that Roy sings about in his album. I particularly focused on images of liminal spaces, which are both literal transitional locations, and also representative of being in a transitional period in ones life, mixing them with an assortment of familiar items and nostalgic imagery.
The artist explores an introspective take on coming of age, as a result my decision to utilize heavy photo-manipulation through this sort of square "chunking" and rearranging was a decision that happened early on, as it symbolized the distortion of self identity and the unease that one may feel growing into adulthood. The image choice throughout the book is filled with nostalgic imagery from my own childhood while contemplative and introspective shots of the artist fill the book as he looks ahead to the future. The color palette reflects the moody and soft feeling of the music; mixing in occasional flickers of deep reds and blues, mirroring the artist's indifference transitioning into anger towards the middle of the album.
Type choice for the headlines throughout the album compliments the blocky and square look of the images as well as the bold and in your face attitude that Roy displays throughout his album. I followed a similar thought process for the pull quotes, choosing something bold but with alternating delicate strokes as the pull quotes are all intimate confessions that Roy makes in his interviews. The choice to use a rounded sans serif for the body copy was a way to maintain a more youthful and familiar look with simpler single story "a"s and "g"s.
